There was a story behind the celebration of this event. It says there was a demon named Mahisasur, who was a great worshiper of great Lord Brahma ji. So when Mahisasur impressed the Brahmaji with his tapasya he asked for a wish which was to not to get killed. So, Devi Durga had to come to kill him.
That’s why the power of Goddess was celebrated and reminded people of this demon encounter with Durga Devi.
There are so many more things in belief of this parva. It has been said that all the 9 avatars of Devis are the avatar of the Goddess Parvati, who is the wife of Lord Shiva, also known as Mahadevi.
These were the well known facts about the celebration of Navratri but at last but not the least there is one more interesting fact about the 9 days of Navratri i.e., all the obstacles or the blockers get away from the environment on these nights so people do a lot more Tapasya for siddhi and Sadhna and to achieve Divine Strength.

These deaths then create a fertile field for growth and creation of the new.
